There were over 100 trade stands at Scotland’s Beef Event held at Dalswinton Estate in the Nith Valley, Dumfriesshire, with awards presented to the best indoor, outdoor and breed society.

A trio of ladies judged the best stands, Lady Landale, the host, Peter’s mother, Lady Treacher, his aunt and Lady Campbell, his cousin.

Dalswinton lost £81 per cow in 2022/23 – was this all down to cost?

In 2022/23 all farmers saw variable costs rise by extraordinary levels and this undoubtedly was the change at Dalswinton which put the business into loss from profit the previous year. The costs of diesel, fertiliser, seed, vet and medication were all up.

A total of 381 calves born in the spring of 2022 have been sold in early 2023 leaving approximately a further 40 to sell. An average price of £1050 per animal generated £401,000 income for the farm.

The majority were sold through the market and 60 sold privately - the key question for the business is how to maximise sale price through marketing.
