    BVD Update

    1st July 2020

We are now in phase 5 of the Scottish BVD eradication scheme.  Latest figures show that of Scotland’s 10,061 herds only 48 have still got PI’s.  Of Scotland’s 535,000 cattle there are only 122 PI’s. We are nearly there.  To encourage the removal of the few left, it has become a cross – compliance issue that PI’s must be kept separate from the core herd, and that keepers and stockmen must observe biosecurity when moving between PI’s and core herds. Un-announced inspections will check if biosecurity is compliant.

The longer there are PI’s going about, the greater the chance of a BVD breakdown as the rest of our national herd becomes more naive.
